How Michigan Magic was born.
A gap in the Ann Arbor youth basketball landscape. A simple idea. And a lot of work to turn a vision into reality.
It started with a simple observation.
Watching the Ann Arbor middle school basketball landscape, one thing became clear: too many talented kids were practicing a lot but rarely playing meaningful games. Recreational leagues were fun but not challenging enough. Elite AAU programs were competitive but expensive, time-consuming, and often overly intense for 12 to 14 year olds.
Parents wanted their kids to improve. Players wanted to compete. Coaches wanted to teach. But the right program didn't exist.
Middle school athletes were stuck.
Build the program we wished existed.
The idea was simple: competitive enough to improve, positive enough to enjoy, structured enough to develop, affordable enough to be accessible.
Michigan Magic was born to give Ann Arbor families a serious, well-run, and supportive travel basketball experience for their middle schoolers — without the cost, chaos, or pressure of elite programs.
Building something legitimate.
Turning a vision into a real organization took serious work. Coach recruitment. Program structure. Communication systems. Tournament selection. Uniforms. Travel planning. Parent expectations. Player experience. Every detail mattered because every detail matters to families.
We received 26 coaching applications and carefully evaluated every one. We built communication systems from scratch. We designed practices with intention. We set standards high because our players and parents deserve a program that operates at a high level.
The inaugural season delivered.
Players improved. Families trusted the program. Coaches led with integrity. Communication stayed strong. And the foundation for something bigger was set.
The 2026-2027 expansion.
Michigan Magic is expanding for the 2026-2027 season to add 6th, 7th, and 8th grade teams — giving even more Ann Arbor families the chance to be part of something special. This is just the beginning. The long-term vision is to build Ann Arbor's home for serious, supportive, and sustainable youth basketball.
